Cincinnati Reds reliever J.J. Hoover reflects on his Pittsburgh roots

I was a credentialed member at PNC Park on Tuesday May 30, and have a few things to share. This is the first of three and is an interview with Cincinnati Reds reliever J.J. Hoover.

The reason for the interview with Hoover is because he was born in Pittsburgh and currently resides in Elizabeth, PA. Hoover was acquired by the Reds on April 1, 2012 and they sent infielder Juan Francisco to the Atlanta Braves in return.  Hoover picked up his first win in the majors on May 26 vs the Colorado Rockies. As of May 30, Hoover is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.69. Hoover is making his second trip to Pittsburgh as a member of the Reds organization. Here is what he had to say.

Zachary Weiss: What does it mean for you to be back here in Pittsburgh?

J.J. Hoover: “It’s lucky really that they’re in our division. Hopefully we can come away with a win today, but it’s been fun to play at home.”

ZW: What has the feeling been like having Reds fans cheering you on in Pittsburgh?

Hoover: “When we’re taking BP and we’re out there shagging, it’s good to see a bunch red shirts out there and having the support of the fans.”

ZW: Can you describe what that feeling is like having major leaguers coming from Pittsburgh?

Hoover: “I think maybe baseball caught on a little slow around here. Now some of the guys that are our age are starting to have some opportunities in professional baseball and are having a shot in the big league level.”

ZW: What advice would you give to local high school and college players trying to become successful in baseball?

Hoover: “Work as hard as you can, take nothing for granted and if it’s something you want to do, give it your all.”
