Steve Breaston not likely to sign with Steelers

Free agent wide receiver Steve Breaston started making his rounds last week, which included a visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, but he left without a contract in hand.

According to the Post Gazette’s Ed Bouchette, a source has informed him that the Steelers will not sign Breaston, but adds that they could revisit the idea at some point in the coming weeks.

The Steelers appeared to have been the favorites all along as Breaston is from Pittsburgh and excelled under current offensive coordinator Todd Haley while in Arizona. They also have an obvious need at receiver, assuming that they do in fact lose Mike Wallace to free agency. But there is also a great deal of risk involved with signing Breaston as he failed to produce during his two seasons while in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform.

Breaston also visited with the Cleveland Browns last Wednesday and Mary Kay Cabot reported that it is unlikely that the Browns will attempt to sign the free agent despite having a ton of money to throw around.

If the Steelers can’t upgrade the position in a better fashion, I’m sure they will take another look at Breaston in the upcoming months.
