The Pittsburgh Steelers continued their busy first day of free agency by adding another piece to their 2013 team by keeping another familiar face.

Bob Labriola of Steelers Digest reported on Tuesday night that the Steelers have re-signed tight end / fullback David Johnson to a one-year contract.

Johnson is re-signed after missing the 2012 campaign after tearing his ACL in the preseason last August.

The Steelers’ final pick in the 2009 NFL Draft (No. 241) has primarily served as a blocker. He has appeared in 47 games, starting 24 times and catching 18 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown.

Johnson was having a pretty good camp a season ago and looked as if he could become just another weapon for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but as it turned out he never got the chance. The Steelers didn’t have as many weapons as they thought they did and their running game was awful. Johnson wouldn’t have made a major difference had he been healthy, but he would have likely made some as a lead blocker and a guy who could catch a pass or two out of the backfield.

Providing he is healthy, it’s a good signing for the Steelers as it is just for minimum money.
