Pittsburgh Steelers’ Kelvin Beachum showing valuable versatility

There were quite a few bright spots surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers as OTAs concluded, but none may have been brighter than second-year offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum.

The loss of free-agent lineman Doug Legursky was one of those things that wasn’t really talked much about, but replacing Legursky’s versatility across the line is something the Steelers need to do.

They may have found their man in Beachum.

A seventh-round pick out of SMU a year ago, Beachum opened up some eyes last year with steady play at right tackle after being forced into the lineup due to injuries.

This year the plan is different for Beachum as you could see him line up all across the offensive line.

It was rumored coming into the season that Beachum would start to get some work at guard, but the Steelers haven’t only done that, but they have started to work him at center as well.

That’s where replacing Legursky comes into play.

Legursky used to be the guy that could fill in at multiple positions when called upon, especially at center where Maurkice Pouncey has never finished a full season of play.

Beachum’s versatility likely won’t land him a starting spot on the Steelers offensive line, but if he could take over the role held by Legursky over the past few years, it would come with plenty of playing time.

The Steelers can’t seem to keep their offensive line healthy and having a guy like Beachum who can fill it at right tackle, guard and possibly even center will be huge for the team as they enter the 2013 season.

Being as versatile as Beachum is becoming could assure him of having a long NFL career as teams can always use lineman who can play multiple positions.

We’ll find out in July if he’s up for the challenge.
