Pittsburgh Pirates: Watch Ball Explode On Martin Maldonado Grounder

If you watch sports long enough, sometimes you see things that you will never see again.

That was the case Friday night during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ loss to the Milwaukee Brewers when catcher Martin Maldonado hit the cover off the ball.

Maldonado “knocked the cover off the ball” in the sixth inning Friday night as he legged out an infield single. Pirates’ third baseman Pedro Alvarez did the best he could to try and throw what was left of the ball.

Take a look at something that you likely won’t ever see again.

The Pirates game was unfortunately impacted by the “exploding ball”. Later that inning, after what would have been the third out if the ball remained in one piece, the Brewers scored a run. The Pirates put together a rally and with a ball bouncing around the left field corner and Marte is held at third. The right call being down 2 runs. However, if the bal doesnt explode, the Pirates are down 1 at that time and Marte most likely is trying to score on that play attempting to tie the game. Bad luck for the Buccos again against the Brewers.

No doubt…didn’t seem fair that an equipment malfunction should cost a team a run (and maybe the game).
