Pittsburgh Penguins Go Retro With New Alternate Jersey
By Matt Gajtka
Although initial reports of a predominantly gold jersey were proven incorrect, the Pittsburgh Penguins nevertheless used a past design as inspiration for the new alternate uniforms they unveiled Friday morning:
These jerseys, which will debut Oct. 22 against the Flyers at Consol Energy Center, will be worn 12 times during the 2014-15 season. 11 of those games will be at home, with the lone road appearance set for Dec. 8 at the Rangers.
This season will mark the first time since 2001-02 that the Penguins will don what the team is calling “Pittsburgh Gold.” The previous time the team wore this uniform design, they were lifting the Stanley Cup in Chicago 22 years ago.
It’s fairly certain that most Pens fans will enjoy the throwback look, which not only hearkens back to the team’s first two championship seasons but also aligns with the shade of gold worn by the Pirates and Steelers.
The Penguins initially changed their colors from light and dark blue to black and gold in 1980 to match the duds worn by their Pittsburgh sporting brethren.
I think it will be a matter of time before the Penguins fully transition away from the metallic “Vegas Gold” they’ve been wearing and get back on board with the brighter shade of gold. A survey of the Consol Energy Center seats in recent years has revealed a growing number of early-90s jerseys among the more modern designs.
What are your thoughts on the Pens’ new threads?
