The zamboni leaves a clean, fresh sheet of ice behind. The boards with their sponsors are in place around the arenas. It is time to drop the puck on another season of the National Hockey League.

According to the folks at the Bovada Online Sportsbook, the Pittsburgh Penguins have the best odds in the Metropolitan Division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference at 12/1 to bring home Lord Stanley’s Cup in the spring. They are tied with the St. Louis Blues at 12/1 on the overall list to bring home the championship.

The remainder of the tale of the tape is that the Black and Gold are at 1/1 odds to repeat at the top of the Metro while they are at 9/2, behind the Boston Bruins at 7/2, to win the Eastern Conference. Mike Johnston’s squad went 3-3-0 in the preseason.

The rest of the Metro Division breaks down as follows per Bovada:

The New York Rangers are listed at 4/1 to win the division, at 8/1 to wrap up the Eastern Conference, and at 20/1 to capture the Stanley Cup. Like Pittsburgh, the Blue Shirts batted .500 in the preseason by going 3-3-0.

Over in the Buckeye State, the Columbus Blue Jackets check in at 7/1 to claim the Metro, at 16/1 to seize the East, and at 33/1 to drink from their first Lord Stanley’s Cup. They brought all cannons to bear in the preseason as the Jackets finished 7-1-0.

Across the Keystone State, the Philadelphia Flyers also come in at 7/1 to appropriate the division, at 16/1 to obtain the East, and at 33/1 to hoist the Stanley Cup. The Broad Street Bullies went 3-3-2 in preseason action.

Inside the Beltway, the Washington Capitals are the third squad at 7/1 to grab the division, at 16/1 to win the East, and are at 33/1 to lay hold of the Stanley Cup. The Caps wrapped up the preseason at 5-3-0.

More from Pittsburgh Penguins

Next up are the New Jersey Devils skate in at 16/1 to nab the division, at 28/1 to ensnare the East, and are at 50/1 to gain the Stanley Cup. The crew from Jersey ended the preseason at 4-1-1.

With their lease expiring this season at the Nassau Coliseum and awaiting a move to the Barclay Center in Brooklyn next season, the New York Islanders are at 16/1 to nick the division, at 33/1 to collar the East, and 66/1 to take the Stanley Cup. The Isles closed exhibition action at 4-2-1.

Last, but not least, are the Carolina Hurricanes who are listed at 50/1 to win the division and the East while they are on the board at 100/1 to hook up with Lord Stanley’s Cup. During the preseason, the Canes finished at 2-5-0.

In a little bit of a surprise, it is the Chicago Blackhawks which Bovada has at 13/2 to inscribe their names on the Cup, making them the overall favorite. Coming in second on the list is the defending champion Los Angeles Kings, who are tied with the Anaheim Ducks and the Boston Bruins at 10/1.

Although the odds are long against Carolina winning the Cup, the Hurricanes have some company on the list of long shots. Joining the Canes are the Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, Nashville Predators and Winnipeg Jets at 100/1 to make it to the final round of commissioner Gary Bettman’s tournament.

Now, let’s drop the puck at center ice to see who can defy the odds this season.
