The Pittsburgh Steelers remain optimistic that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger  can play this Sunday against the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Ben Roethlisberger claimed on Sunday he was suffering from a sore shoulder and that his current status is day-to-day.

The star quarterback spoke very briefly to reporters on his way to the locker room, stating that he had an MRI on Sunday but was still waiting on results and does not know the extent of his injury. He plans on meeting with doctors later in the week, but in the meantime will participate in practice very lightly.

Linebacker Vontaze Burfict was the man to injure Big Ben, when in the final seconds of the third quarter he slipped past the offensive line to deliver a major sack. Ben would return to the game for the last drive of the fourth quarter to win the game.

Roethlisberger did indeed state he was in “a lot of pain” on that final drive, but still was at least able to effectively throw the ball short distances.

“I think for fans of Ben and the Steelers were relieved it wasn’t a broken clavicle (collarbone) like Tony Romo suffered twice this season,” said orthopedic surgeon Walt Lowe.

Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said that he fully expects Roethlisberger to play and is preparing accordingly.

In other injury news, wide receiver Antonio Brown “is said to be fine and should be able to play against the Broncos,” via Yahoo Sports. Brown suffered a blowing hit to the head from Burfict, immediately knocking him out and sending him for concussion protocol.

Regardless of either players current injury status, the Steelers desperately need both Brown and Roethlisberger if they want to have a chance to get past the Broncos on Sunday.

The Broncos ranked 1st in total defense this regular season, only allowing an average of 283.1 yards per game.

In an in depth elevated stats power ranking from the Mile High Report, the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently 10th in the NFL, and the Denver Broncos rank fifth.

A win this Sunday for the Steelers would be one for the history books, giving them sole possession of most playoff wins ever with 35. They are currently tied with the Dallas Cowboys.

The opening odds for this Sunday’s game lists the Denver Broncos with a 2.5 point advantage, though all four major sports books lists the Broncos with a 6.5 point advantage. However, any true Steeler fan knows how well their ability is to overcome the odds.
