In another overtime thriller for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin caused a hooking penalty to Jordan Staal, leading to a goal just seconds later for Jeff Skinner.

Evgeni Malkin’s Penguins tried their hardest to fight to get back into tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

They began their comeback down 2-0 to the Canes, after a scoreless first period, followed by goals for Carolina by Eric Staal and Kris Versteeg early in the second.

It was Kris Letang who rose to the occasion first for the Penguins, scoring a beautiful slap shot right off the faceoff at the 10:29 mark. You could tell something was obviously said in the locker room after just five shots in the first period. Tonight we started to see the bigger leadership role Letang is making with his attitude out on the ice and his hustle coming off of an injury.

Letang was outracing the Hurricanes forwards all night for the puck, and he was for sure the key role in tonight’s comeback.

Heading into the third, you could tell the pace was shifting out on the ice immediately, and the Penguins began to try their hardest to just out work the Hurricanes. Chris Kunitz was able to do so in the sixth minute of the period to tie it up. It was then up to the defense to do their best to survive the rest of the game without a goal. They were able to, and the game moved on to overtime.

More from Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins began the extra portion of tonight’s contest pretty evenly matched to start out. Then the Evgeni Malkin penalty happened.

That sent Carolina on a four on three powerplay, which was almost destined to score a goal. Jeff Skinner was able to put the puck in the back of the net due to a worn out penalty kill squad that couldn’t get to him in time. The Penguins went off the ice looking exhausted and frustrated, and that loss marks them now one point back in a tight wild card race.

Penguins fans are obviously frustrated themselves with the continues outcomes like this, and they deserve to. Unfortunately in sports every great dynasty still has some off years, it’s just so strange to see it in what should be the best offense in the league.

Hopefully the Geno and Sid can pull this team together and get into the wild card spot. Their next contest will be on Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, puck drops at 7:30 PM EST.
