Pittsburgh Penguins Still Trying to Get a Goal Scorer

While this off season has been an uneventful one for Pittsburgh Penguins fans it hasn’t been from lack of trying by General Manager Ray Shero. The Penguins went into this off season with a plan to attract big names and a goal scoring winger to play with Sidney Crosby.

So far they have come up empty handed. Striking out on Zach Praise, Ryan Suter, who both signed mega deals with the Minnesota Wild, and Rick Nash who was just traded to the New York Rangers.

However, the Penguins have not given up trying to get a goal scorer to play with all star center Sidney Crosby. The latest rumor out deal with the Wild and winger Dany Heatley. Is he really worth the risk for the Penguins? Players being discussed in the trade is a combination of Paul Martin, Pascal Dupuis, Tyler Kennedy and a first round pick.

That is a lot to give up for a person who makes $7.5 million the next two years. Last year Heatley played in all 82 games scoring 24 goals and 53 points. I would prefer to give up Martin and Kennedy, but keep the pick and Dupuis. Dupuis is a valuable role player for Penguins. Heatley could be a great addition if he could find a way to rekindle some of his magic he had with the Ottawa Senators playing with Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson. But Heatley comes with baggage. The man has been dealt more times than a black jack hand in Vegas.

Even if the Penguins don’t pull off a trade for Heatley they are still looking to add a winger via free agency. Rumor has it that Shane Doan was recently in Pittsburgh to talk with the Penguins. It appears he would rather stay in Phoenix but with ownership issues it appears less likely he will get that chance.

It is also being rumored that the Penguins are high on Alexander Semin’s list of teams. Their competition the New Jersey Devils. Anyone of these three come with baggage but playing with Sidney Crosby could create magic and is well worth the risk.
