Cliff Kresge leads the Mylan Classic with a round to go

The winds that were heavily feared arrived and with rain hitting the golf course, scores were lower on the softer grounds.

As a result many golfers, especially the afternoon tee times, had to grind out rounds. It ended with Cliff Kresge on top of a log jam leaderboard.

One stroke behind the lead are Brad Fritsch, Robert Streb and Nicholas Thompson.

“It was a very patient and challenging day,” said Kresge. “It was a little bit of sloppy golf and a little bit tougher.”

Inside the round: Cliff Kresge

Kresge’s round started strong as he birdied both the second and third holes of the day to go to 13 under par. In the meantime, playing partner Brad Fritsch bogeyed the same holes allowing Kresge to take the lead.

From there, the wind limited Kresge’s opportunity and he had to fill holes with pars. His bogey on 17 dropped him to 12-under.

Around the course

The round of the day was Jason Allred’s six-under-par journey. He birdied four holes on the front nine but a bogey brought him down. Then he birdied 8, 9 and 10 before two more birdies late to register a 65.

John Chin’s scorecard was the most interesting. He bogeyed 2, 3, 7 and 10. All he did after that was eagle the par-five eighth hole and par-four ninth hole. He is 8 under on the tournament, tying him for 11th place.

Steven Alker had an interesting scorecard as well. He birdied 2 and 6 before giving them back on 7 and 8 with bogeys. He would birdie 9 and continue the streak on the 10th, 11th 12th and 13th holes. He bogeyed 15 but still is tied for 13th place at 7 under.

Local golfer Steve Wheatcroft had a rough start, bogeying 1, 3 and 8. He would rally, shooting five-under-par on the back nine to finish at 4 under for the tournament tying him for 34th place.

Three’s a crowd

There already was an ace a day, and Adam Long added his name to the list.

“I was kind of bothered by the hole before so I got up there, got my number and just hit it. It was about a 125 shot, it was playing a little shorter and I hit a little pitching wedge in there. I hit it just past the hole and I thought it was going be a good shot and it just kept coming closer and closer and it just dropped in. I was just as surprised as everybody else.”

Long made the cut right at the two under number and is pleased to be playing the weekend after his luck seemed to be running low.

“I’ve been struggling lately to even make the cuts. It’s definitely not a goal to just make cuts, but it kind of got to the point where it would be good to just make a cut. I finished birdie-birdie Friday to do that and that propelled me into the weekend.”

Of note:

Due to possible bad weather golfers will go off in threesomes and tee off on both the first and tenth holes. The golfers will tee off between 8 and 9:50 a.m.

Erik Flores withdrew from the tournament due to an ankle injury. He was plus-2 overall.
