The Steelers have to find a way to replace Keenan Lewis and Allen will be given the first opportunity.

The Steelers’ secondary was very tough to throw against a season ago and that was without a great pass rush. That being said, it is very important that they find a legitimate corner to play opposite Ike Taylor in 2013.

Allen has the talent to do it, which he flashed in 2012 as the team’s nickel corner.

The Steelers have some insurance in William Gay, but he was re-signed to compete with Curtis Brown for Allen’s spot in the nickel.

If Allen can’t handle the job and Gay is pressed into starting duties, the Steelers could be in some trouble.

He is a guy with good coverage skills and can make the big play when needed. Additionally, Allen has proven to be a guy that doesn’t make a lot of mental errors.

This is a big year for him. If he proves he is up for the job, he could be in store for a contract extension. If he doesn’t, it could mean starting over and looking for another young corner.
