Pittsburgh Pirates place Gomez on DL; recall Reid, Hughes

With their bullpen depleted after Sunday’s dramatic come from behind win against the Cincinnati Reds, it was all but a certainty that the Pittsburgh Pirates would make some roster moves before their series opener Monday against the Atlanta Braves.

That’s exactly what they did as they summoned right-handed relievers Ryan Reid and Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis.
To make room for the new additions, the Bucs place yesterday’s starter Jeanmar Gomez on the 15-day disabled list after Gomez left yesterday’s start after only one inning with tightness in his forearm. In addition, outfielder Alex Presley was the odd man out as he was optioned back to Indianapolis.
Reid was becoming a star with the Indians, posting an ERA of 0.52 in 20 games for Indianapolis. The 28-year-old has never appeared in the majors.
Hughes appeared in 13 games out of the bullpen for the Pirates earlier this season and was 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA before being sent to the minors in May. He allowed one run in 13 innings while at Triple-A.
The Pirates made room for Reid on the 40-man roster by recalling pitcher Phil Irwin from Indianapolis and placing him on the 60-day disabled list.
Gomez is 2-0 with a 3.07 ERA in 12 games, including seven starts, this season, but with a few off days the next couple of weeks, the Pirates won’t need a fifth starter until the middle of June. But that guy could turn out to be Charlie Morton, who threw 85 pitches yesterday in a rehab start.
