2013 MLB Draft: Pittsburgh Pirates’ selections from all three days
By Larry Snyder
Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington was not plugging any current roster needs over the three days of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Rather, Huntington was collecting prospects from the collegiate, junior college and high school levels in order to strengthen the overall quality of talent in the organization.
The players selected go through a long development process in the Pittsburgh farm system and by the time that most of them are ready to graduate to the majors, the composition of the Pirates’ roster could be markedly different.

The Bucs drafted 10 high school players, six from junior college and 25 college players over the draft. They chose 16 right-handed pitchers, four left-handed pitchers, six outfielders, 11 infielders and four catchers.
Huntington and the Pirates went with three high-school prospects on Day 1. The last time Pittsburgh selected a high school position player in the first round was in 2005 when they picked Andrew McCutchen.
With the ninth pick overall in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, the Pirates chose Austin Meadows from Grayson High School in Georgia. The outfielder is listed at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, and bats/throws left. Baseball America rated Meadows with the best strike-zone awareness and second-best hitting ability among high school prospects. He has a commitment to play at Clemson University.
With their next pick at No. 14, the Bucs chose catcher Reese McGuire from Kentwood High School in Covington, Wash. McGuire is listed at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds; he bats left and throws right. In 2012, McGuire led the USA 18U squad that won the gold medal at the IBAF 18U World Championship in South Korea. He has a college commitment to play for the University of San Diego.
Pittsburgh closed out the first day of the draft by taking left-handed pitcher Blake Taylor from Dana Hills High School in California with the 51st pick overall. He is listed at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds and bats/throws left. Baseball America rated Taylor as the 32nd-best pitcher in this year’s draft and was a California All Region First-Team selection. He has a college commitment to play baseball for the University of Hawaii.
