On Monday night, Evgeni Malkin’s dad Vladimir gave a interview to a Russian TV station. They asked him questions about his son and his recent contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Vladimir said that Dallas offered Evgeni a bigger contract than Pittsburgh did, but “Geno” said he didn’t want to go to Dallas even though his buddy Sergei Gonchar is there. Evgeni said that he is used to the team and the city of Pittsburgh.

This is very interesting to me. Dallas can’t sign Malkin because he wasn’t an unrestricted free agent (UFA) before signing on for eight more years in Pittsburgh. He still had one year remaining on his current contract before taking the deal.

This means that Dallas was probably offering a trade to try and get Malkin to come to Dallas. There is no way that the Penguins would trade Malkin unless Dallas offered someone like Jamie Benn or Tyler Seguin and many more players. I just can’t believe that Dallas actually may have tried to get him in a trade. Maybe the offer was what the Stars could’ve given Malkin if he didn’t sign a new contract with Pittsburgh.

On a better note, I still look forward to seeing Malkin play this year after he signed his $76-million contract extension.
