RMU Men’s Hockey: Terry Shafer Earns 3rd Straight AHA Goaltender Of The Week Honor
By Larry Snyder
For the third consecutive week, the Atlantic Hockey Association has named Robert Morris University’s Terry Shafer its Goaltender of the Week for games played through Sunday, Feb. 16. He shared the honor this week with Matt Grogan of the Connecticut Huskies.
Shafer, a sophomore from Penfield, N.Y., backstopped RMU (12-12-4, 12-7-4 AHA) to a split with Niagara last week, allowing four goals in two games. Shafer turned away 34 shots on Thursday, but the Colonials lost 5-3 at Niagara. On Saturday, he came back strong as he helped Robert Morris defeat the Purple Eagles 5-0 at 84 Lumber Arena. It was Shafer’s third career shutout, and his second in six games.

Shafer’s 44-save effort on Saturday was his third 40-save performance this season. In the three straight weeks that Terry has earned the Goaltender of the Week award from the AHA, he has put together a record of 4-1-1 with a 1.81 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage to go along with the two shutouts.
Shafer now has an overall record of 12-12-4 this season with a 2.74 GAA and a .920 save percentage.
Since Jan. 1, Robert Morris has gone 10-2-2, all in the AHA, and is now in in fifth place in the conference, only one game behind UConn. The top four teams earn a bye in the first round of the AHA championship tournament, which begins March 7.
RMU returns to the ice with a home-and-home series against the Canisius College Golden Griffins this weekend. Friday’s contest will be at 84 Lumber Arena while Saturday’s game will be at Buffalo State Sports Arena. The puck will drop at 7:05 both nights.
The last time the two teams got together was Nov. 8 at Robert Morris and the Colonials came away with a 6-1 victory.
