Since Verner is being linked to the Steelers he should be discussed. Verner is considered the best cornerback in free agency, being rivaled only by Aqib Talib. The skill he possesses is tough to beat. He’s primarily a zone-coverage corner, but is excellent at press and man coverage, too. Overall, he’s incrediblely balanced.
I’m not going to lie, I have zero confidence that the Steelers will actually go for him. However, if they did I couldn’t complain. He fills a huge need at corner and provides them with a top 10 player at the position. I’m all for this signing if they can pull it off. Maybe Steelers defensive back coach Carnell Lake can convince his former player to take less money and join him in Pittsburgh.

Did you really think I wasn’t going to throw in a wild card? Yes, I understand Cromartie is past his prime. Truth is, he wouldn’t break the bank and he’s better than William Gay.
I could name at least 10 free agents that would be a better corner than Gay. I’m not saying he’s awful, but he’s mediocre at best. Cromartie provides an instant upgrade at a cheap price. Having Cromartie, Ike Taylor, Gay, the up-and-coming Cortez Allen and a drafted cornerback would be a massive improvement from last year’s cornerback tandem of Allen and Taylor.
Cromartie could also be acquired at a cheaper price than Verner and most other corners, giving the Steelers to a chance to sign many more quality players to fill needs. Plus, while he was a Pro Bowl alternate, he’s still coming off a Pro Bowl season. I know it’s a long shot, but it honestly makes sense.
