The Pittsburgh Riverhounds, winless and in last place in the USL Pro standings, relieved Justin Evans of his head coaching duties on Monday afternoon. The Hounds are off to a 0-4-3 start in 2014.
Evans, a Peters Township High School graduate and former Major League Soccer player, was in his fifth season as the coach of the Riverhounds.
The search for a new head coach is underway. Nikola Katic, a defender with the team since 2009, will take over as interim coach. He will be assisted by Director of Academy Operations, Scott Gibson.
Katic has been one of the key coaches in the Riverhounds Academy throughout his time in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh heads out on a two-game road trip this weekend when they take on the Wilmington Hammerheads at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Legion Stadium in North Carolina. Then, they travel down the road to Blackbaud Stadium in South Carolina on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. match with the Charleston Battery.
The Hounds will host RWB Adria of the USASA at Highmark Stadium on Wednesday, May 28 in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The winner will travel to Illinois for a fourth-round pairing with the Chicago Fire of MLS sometime during June 10-18.
