It’s tough to know who to trust at this point.

After multiple reports that mega-prospect Gregory Polanco would be called up this weekend, sources within the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization have told the Tribune-Review’s Rob Biertempfel that those reports are wrong.

With the Pirates set to host the first-place Brewers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at PNC Park and the “Super 2” deadline likely passed, conventional wisdom held that outfield phenom Polanco would make his MLB debut within days.

That may yet be the case, but the powers-that-be in Pittsburgh clearly want to announce the news on their own terms.

There’s also the matter of the MLB Draft, which begins Thursday with the first round televised on MLB Network. Perhaps the Pirates don’t want too much of the media focus to deviate from their upcoming selections.

At the same time, there’s zero chance “Polanco Watch” falls out of the news cycle, especially after this game of “he said, he said” has been played out publicly.

The fervor in Pittsburgh to see one of the top prospects in all of baseball isn’t going to die down until he’s called up.
