Report: Pittsburgh Penguins’ New Alternate Jersey To Be Predominantly Gold
By Matt Gajtka
Slightly lost in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ offseason management overhaul is that the team committed to unveil a new alternate uniform for the 2014-15 season.
That fact was unearthed Tuesday when the Penguins announced that fans can pre-order the new jersey – sight unseen – prior to its official unveiling on Friday, Sept. 19.
Fortunately for the curious among us, the comprehensive hockey uniform website Icethetics has a scoop on what the new jersey set might look like.
According to the author, the Penguins will wear uniforms similar to the predominantly yellow-gold model they donned during the early 1980s. (Thanks to NHLUniforms.com for the image at the top of this post.)
The team had previously revealed that the new alternate would reinstate the vintage gold that the team wore for about two decades before “Vegas gold” took hold for good in 2002-03. This move would mark a departure from their past two alternate jerseys, both of which prominently featured blue.
While those uniforms were nods to 1970s nostalgia, reverting to yellow-gold would hearken back to an era that saw the Penguins begin their rise from NHL doormat to two-time Stanley Cup champion.
