This week’s college football match-up comes at high noon on Saturday with West Virginia on the road taking on Big Ten foe and border rival, Maryland.

The last time these two programs faced each other was last September in Baltimore as Maryland shutout West Virginia 37-0 and snapped WVU’s seven-game winning streak. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 26-22-2.

West Virginia opened the season on the road with a 33-23 loss against the Alabama Crimson Tide and bounced back in Week 2 at home with a 54-0 shutout of the Towson University Tigers.

Meanwhile, Maryland comes into the contest on a two-game win streak to open the season as they rolled over the James Madison University Dukes 52-7 at home, and then went on the road last week to defeat the University of South Florida Bulls 24-17 in Tampa.

Under head coach Dana Holgorsen, the Mountaineers are 18-11 in day games and 7-7 in particular for road day games.

Taking a look at the WVU offense, starting 5th-year senior quarterback Clint Trickett is off to a solid start, completing 64 of 85 passes for 713 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in the games against Alabama and Towson.

Trickett’s three touchdowns passes were spread around to senior wide receiver Kevin White, senior wide receiver Mario Alford, and junior wide receiver Jordan Thompson. White has 244 yards on 19 receptions while Thompson has hauled in 10 catches for 114 yards. Alford also has 10 catches in two games for 75 yards.

However, keep an eye also on freshman quarterback William Crest, who may see some action as he went 3 for 4 last week against Towson and ran the ball five times for 33 yards and a touchdown.

The ground game has been led by redshirt sophomore running back Rushel Shell, who gained 113 yards in 24 carries in two games played. This week, the Maryland defense will also have to account for redshirt junior running back Andrew Buie, who returned to the field against Towson and put up 70 yards on just nine carries.

The Blue and Gold defense rose to the occasion last week as it produced its first shutout of the Holgorsen era. Last Saturday, West Virginia limited the Tigers to 122 yards of offense and they were limited to a 4 of 15 success rate on third down.

Junior safety Karl Joseph has nine solo tackles and assisted on 11 more for a total of 20 tackles in two games for West Virginia while redshirt senior linebacker Wes Tonkery contributed five solo tackles and assisted on nine more for 14 total tackles.

Maryland head coach Randy Edsall is in his fourth season in charge of the sideline at College Park. He is 1-2 against Holgorsen and the Moutaineers and has a career coaching mark of 2-8 against West Virginia.

The Terps are averaging 38.0 points per game through their first two contests, which ranks them fourth overall in the Big Ten. It is the second consecutive season Maryland has put up at least 75 points in its first two games.

In their two victories to start the season, 6th-year senior quarterback C.J. Brown has completed 28 of 52 for 312 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. His favorite target has been 6-foot junior wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who has 12 receptions for 103 yards.

The ground attack is led by sophomore running back Wes Brown, who has 26 carries in two games for a total of 146 yards while junior running back Brandon Ross has contributed 111 yards on 22 carries.

The Terrapins defense held USF to 83 yards rushing in last Saturday’s victory. Since 2012, it is the 10th time a Maryland defense has claimed that feat and the first time since they held Virginia Tech to 54 yards rushing last November.

One of the key moments in the win over the Bulls was when junior linebacker Avery Thompson recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a fourth quarter touchdown that helped Maryland come out on top 24-17.

Senior linebacker L.A. Goree leads the squad with 11 solo tackles and assisted on nine more for a total of 20 in two games while junior defensive back Sean Davis has also contributed 11 solo tackles and assisted on five additional stops for a total of 16 in two games.

Next up, West Virginia opens the Big 12 Conference part of their schedule as they host the Oklahoma Sooners at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, Sept 20 at 7:30 p.m.
