Pitt Panthers men’s basketball redshirt senior Cameron Wright will miss 10 weeks after fracturing his left foot, as per several media reports.

Wright was expected to be a leader of this team but until around Thanksgiving will have to be done on the bench. Wright averaged a career high 10.5 points per game last season and matched his defensive presence with offense as well. His improvement was well noted and he would have been one of the key forces at season’s start.

Wright scored in double figures 20 times last season and was the winner of the Skip Prosser Award, honoring the ACC’s scholarship athlete of the year for men’s basketball. He started all 36 games last season.

Josh Newkirk likely will take his place. Newkirk was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and scored 20 points in a win against North Carolina State.

“It surprised us, definitely caught us off guard a little bit,” North Carolina State head coach Mark Gottfried said at the time. “You have to give him credit, that was a bit of a surprise.”

Now entering his sophomore season, Newkirk will not surprise anymore. He is the fastest player on this Panthers team. You do not put too much stock into summer league, but it looked like Newkirk was moving even quicker and more importantly had better and consistent range. He will now be an important part of this Panthers team.

The Panthers start their season with a scrimmage Oct. 3, play its first exhibition game Oct. 30 versus Indiana University of Pennsylvania and open the regular season schedule Nov. 14 versus Niagara.
