It’s still technically the offseason, so this type of article is still legit – at least until Spring Training begins.

As I sit here on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I find myself wondering exactly how much Double Bubble Chewing Gum that is consumed by Clint Hurdle per season. Don’t judge me.

As a technical person, math is always the answer, so I took to Excel. First, a few assumptions:

– Home game activities begin at 4:00 PM and conclude at 10:30 PM, the time the final piece is popped

– Away game activities begin at 5:30 PM and conclude at 10:30 PM, the time the final piece is popped

– Clint Hurdle’s gum of choice is Double Bubble

– Double Bubble’s flavor lasts > 10 minutes (yeah, OK)

– Only one piece is ever chewed at a time, but chewing is continuous between the time range listed above

To the results.  In the following table, you will find low, mid, and high MPP (Minutes per Piece) estimates based upon the amount of time each piece is chewed (10, 20, and 30 minutes, respectively), which will allow us to calculate Total GPG (Gum per Game).

That’s a lot of gum.

Once we know the GPG numbers, we can then calculate the total cost per season, assuming the cost of a container of Double Bubble is $18.99:

Yes, I would have thought the cost per season would have been much higher too.  On a serious note, good for Clint for choosing chewing gum over tobacco products. That stuff will kill you.

Notes:

– Apparently, there are 15 calories in a piece of Double Bubble. That would mean he’s consuming 600 calories of chewing gum per game if he chews each piece for 10 minutes.

– Here’s a photo of Clint after unsuccessfully arguing that Double Bubble > Juicy Fruit, obviously the umpire’s favorite.  Hurdle’s stance was similar to the Gatorade argument made here.

– Clint Hurdle’s Gum apparently has it’s own Twitter and Facebook pages. The Twitter feed is pretty legit:

– Impressive.  This is exactly what you think it’s going to be.
