Last Saturday, head coach Jerry Schmitt’s squad tasted victory for the first time at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium as they beat the Bucknell University Bison 26-7. It was the first time in eight tries that the Dukes won in Lewisburg, Pa.

It was a good day for Duquesne’s aerial attack. Redshirt junior quarterback Dillon Buechel connected with a trio of seniors, Wayne Capers, Chris King, and Dave Thomas on three different touchdown strikes.

Running back P.J. Fulmore was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for his performance. The 5-foot-7, 197-pound freshman rushed for 87 yards on 11 carries for a 7.9 yards per carry average against the Bison.

Senior Sam Martello led the defense with a career-high 15 tackles. The Westlake, Ohio, native contributed 10 solo stops and assisted on five additional tackles. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound linebacker also handled a fumble recovery in the end zone.

The last time Duquesne got out of the blocks to a 2-0 start was 2010 when they kicked the season off with wins over Bucknell and Dayton. You have to go back to 2002 for the last time that the Dukes started off the campaign 3-0.

  • Last season, Dayton finished with an 8-3 mark overall and 6-2 in the Pioneer Football Leauge. The Flyers, under head coach Rick Chamberlin, wound up tied with Drake for second place in the PFL.

The Flyers are coming off a bye week after defeating the Robert Morris University Colonials 27-24 at Joe Walton Stadium in week one.

One member of the Flyers offense to watch is running back Connor Kacsor. He is Dayton’s career record holder in rushing yardage. The 6-foot, 211-pound redshirt senior ran for 1,547 yards and recorded 17 touchdowns in 2014.

Linebacker Christopher Beaschler spearheaded the defense against the Colonials. The 6-foot, 226-pound senior had nine tackles, and assisted on nine more for a total of 18 stops. He added two sacks to the box score.

Not to be overlooked is senior safety Danny Leach. The 5-foot-11, 201-pound defensive back contributed a pair of interceptions in the second half to help Dayton secure the victory over Robert Morris.

My Prediction: The Dukes capture their third victory of the 2015 campaign. I forecast a 31-20 final score in favor of Duquesne.

Up Next: Coming up on Saturday, Sept. 26th, the Dukes are on the road for their next match-up. Duquesne faces the Great Danes of the University of Albany at Bob Ford Field. The contest starts at 3 p.m.
