Pittsburgh’s Greatest Coaches
By Rich Donahue
Chuck Noll 1969-1991
Regular Season Record: 193-148-1
Playoff Record: 16-8
1989 NFL Coach of the Year, 4-time Super Bowl Champ (1974,1975,1978,1979), Pro Football Hall of Fame
Starting with the most obvious choice on this list, former Steelers Chuck Noll is not only the best coach in franchise history, but quite possibly the greatest coach in Pittsburgh sports and NFL history. Before Noll took over the reins of the Black & Gold, the Steelers were one of the worst teams in the NFL. From 1933 to 1968, they only made one playoff appearance.
After overhauling the Steelers rosters with hall of famers like Joe Greene and Terry Bradshaw, Noll turned the franchise into one of the most dominate teams in the NFL. A dynasty in the 1970’s, he led the team to 4 Super Bowls in the decade. Noll has the most wins in franchise history and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
