The Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox squared off on Wednesday, February 28th in the Bucs’ sixth 2018 MLB Spring Training game of the season.

For the second time in three days, the Pittsburgh Pirates had the opportunity to face the Boston Red Sox. Even though the Bucs weren’t able to pick-up their first preseason win of 2018, they did play much better on Wednesday against Boston. If case you’ve blocked it from your memory already, the Pirates lost 13-2 to the Red Sox on Monday.

In Spring Training, we’re not looking for wins or losses. What fans want to see is a ball-club giving numerous players the opportunity to prove themselves. Regardless of the Pirates record in preseason so far, I believe we can honestly say they’re giving each guy a fair chance to put their best foot forward.

Take a look at the Pirates vs Red Sox box score below, as the Bucs gave everything they could to come away victorious, but fell just short.

Box Score:

Highs:

I’ve been pretty tough on the Pirates pitching staff thus far, but they actually performed pretty darn well on Wednesday. If it weren’t for a tough seventh inning, we could’ve been celebrating Pittsburgh’s first win of Spring Training right now. Nevertheless, I have to give credit where credit is due. Chad Kuhl pitched two fantastic innings for the Pirates, giving up no runs, no hits and no walks.

Needless to say, that’s a great sign for Pittsburgh.

Lows:

Kyle Crick was the only Pirates player who I believe didn’t have a good day whatsoever. Not only did he get credited with the loss, but he gave up two runs on three hits in only one inning of relief. I’m all for letting guys get their troubles out in Spring Training, but that was extremely inefficient.

Next: Trade for Corey Dickerson was huge move for Pirates

Now with an 0-4-2 record heading into Thursday afternoon, the Pirates’ attention will be placed back on the Toronto Blue Jays. If you want to take a look at MLB’s preview for Blue Jays vs Pirates at 1:05 PM on Thursday, you can take a look at it here.
