With the recent injury to Mason Rudolph, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear ready to turn to rookie quarterback Devlin Hodges. Here is what we should know about the new man under center in Pittsburgh.

First Ben Roethlisberger goes down, now Mason Rudolph is out. It is for this reason that the Steelers look as though they will hand over the offense to first-year man Devlin Hodges.

While Hodges played well at times in the preseason, he is certainly not a household name. Since he will definitely be on the roster, and will likely be the starter, let’s learn a little bit more about number 6.

An undrafted rookie, Hodges comes from Samford University where his career at the collegiate level was electrifying. He set the FCS record for passing yards (14,584), and he finished his career with 111 touchdowns and 41 interceptions.

Hodges has also been known to use his feet, racking up 1017 yards at Samford and adding 17 touchdowns on the ground. As a senior, he won the Walter Payton Award as the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS.

As the Steelers’ number four quarterback this preseason, Hodges completed 52.6% of his passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception over parts of three games. In relief this past Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, he went 7/9 for 68 yards.

Of course, Hodges did not make the cut for the Steelers’ roster after training camp, but he quickly found his way back into the fold due to several unforeseen circumstances.

The Steelers’ rookie QB clocks in at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, and, although a nickname like “Duck” is probably not ideal for a player at his position, Hodges has certainly shown in college, and in an extremely small sample size in the NFL, that he can get the job done.

It is unclear how long Mason Rudolph will actually be out, but with the simplicity of Randy Fichtner’s offense, look for Devlin Hodges to have some success throughout his time as QB1 for Pittsburgh.
