Grading Every Pittsburgh Steelers Position Group Performance So Far this Season
By Chris Ross
Defensive Line
Finally, after focusing on the inconsistent mess that is the Pittsburgh Steelers offense, we can move on to the much-improved defensive side of the ball, starting with the defensive line. Another veteran-laden unit, the Steelers defensive line has played well, especially as of late. In shutting down the Bengals, Ravens and Chargers over the last three games, the Steelers linemen have been overwhelming opposing offenses.
Unfortunately, it’s not all good news when it comes to the unit. Stephon Tuitt, a productive, veteran lineman in the midst of his best season so far, was lost for the season early in last week’s contest. Tuitt, who was starting to come into his own as a pass-rusher, is a huge loss that threatens to effect the entire defense.
On the bright side, Cam Heyward has continued his strong play. A veteran leader, Heyward is outstanding against both the run and pass and though he hasn’t been as impressive as Tuitt, he has been elite in his own right. Tyson Alualu, the veteran, tasked with replacing Tuitt as a starter, played well in relief last week and has been a nice presence in a rotational role to this point. Meanwhile, nose tackle Javon Hargrave has continued to impress as a rock-solid starter that has improved throughout his Steelers career.
The only thing keeping this grade from being higher is the unit’s slow start to the season, back when the whole defense appeared unsettled and sloppy. Luckily, with their play recently, expect this to be much higher at season’s end.
