In beating the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed us all the reasons why they should be considered a true contender in the AFC.

Facing a talented Los Angeles Rams team fresh off a bye week, the Pittsburgh Steelers were widely viewed as underdogs heading into Week 10. Despite three straight wins heading into Sunday’s matchup, many looked at the Steelers’ banged-up roster and assumed that the Rams would handle them without much trouble. Once the actual game started, however, it became clear that Pittsburgh wasn’t going down without a fight. After a slow start that included an opening-possession turnover, the Steelers settled down and showed that their recent winning streak is no fluke. In upsetting Los Angeles with a score of 17-12, the Steelers have once again proven themselves as legitimate contenders in the AFC North.

For a team that once looked dead in the water, the Steelers turnaround this season has been astounding. Head coach Mike Tomlin deserves a ton of credit for the way he has handled all the injuries his team has suffered and the front office deserves credit for the way they added talent even after the team’s 1-4 start. It’s not always pretty, and the offense has been a complete disaster at times, but it’s impossible to overlook this team’s heart and tenacity.

With their huge win and a couple of losses by the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts, the Steelers are suddenly much closer to making the playoffs than anyone expected a month ago. Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens appear to be running away with the division, but as long as Pittsburgh continues to play well, a spot in the Wild Card round will be well within their grasp. This win over the Rams was much-needed and allowed us to come out of the week with these three takeaways.
