Riverhounds shutout by Rhinos on Friday night

On a clear Friday night, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer club (9-7-7, 34 points) saw their four-game winning streak snapped as they were shut out by the Rochester Rhinos 1-0 at Sahlen’s Stadium. It was the final home game of the USL PRO season for the Rhinos (5-9-10, 25 points).

The Riverhounds remain in eighth place in the USL PRO standings which is the final playoff spot in the league. Pittsburgh still controls their own destiny with three games remaining on the schedule.

The scoring opportunity occurred in the 90th minute for Rochester when substitute forward Kendell McFayden drove down the middle of the field and was tackled about 25 yards from the goal from behind by Riverhounds defender Andrew Marshall. Head referee David Mon booked Marshall for the foul and then moved the Hounds’ wall back the required 10 yards which opened the door for McManus.

McManus took two steps before striking the ball with his right foot over the wall and into the lower-right corner of the Riverhounds’ goal.

Both goalkeepers, Pittsburgh’s Hunter Gilstrap and Rochester’s Brandon Miller had two saves on the night. The Rhinos had a 5-4 edge in shots against the Hounds.

Up Next: The Hounds are back in action along the Monongahela River at Highmark Stadium in Station Square on Sunday, August 11 at 3:30 p.m. when the have a rematch with VSI Tampa Bay FC. Pittsburgh defeated Tampa Bay in their previous match-up 2-1 on Friday, Aug 2.

It was announced that during Sunday’s match, the Riverhounds will be raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Pittsburgh players will feature ‘Willig’ jerseys at the game in honor of the club’s honorary team captain, Sydney Willig, a 10 year-old currently living with Cystic Fibrosis. Following the match, a “Shirt Off the Back” raffle will take place, where fans will have the opportunity of taking home the game day jerseys worn by their favorite Hound.
