Re-drafting the Pittsburgh Pirates’ drafts from 2014-2017
Re-drafting the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2017 draft — only the first and second rounds.
Pirates original pick: Shane Baz at 12th overall
The horror of the Archer trade will never stop. Baz will be a frontline starter one day, and the Pirates will still probably be signing Jordan Lyles to take his spot.
Redraft pick: Shane Baz at 12th overall
The good news is in this virtual reality, we have enough young pitching. Meaning we don’t trade for Archer. The happiness the thought of not trading for Archer is giving me is almost certainly unhealthy.
Pirates original pick: Steven Jennings at 42nd overall
While I am still relatively optimistic about MacGregor if he recovers from TJ, Steven Jennings is a longshot to carve out a big-league career. Comps to Mike Leake, which means a small right-hander who does not throw hard. Most get hit hard and do not make it.
Redraft pick: Spencer Howard 45th overall
Contrary to Jennings, Howard has a big shot at making it in the bigs. Was considered “untouchable” by the Phillies at this past trade deadline for a reason.
Pirates original pick: Cal Mitchell at 50th overall
Pirates re-draft pick: Cal Mitchell at 50th overall
Power lefty with some holes in his swing, and can’t run. But the combo of power and not many other seemingly good prospects available keep Mitchell with the Bucs.
Pirates original pick: Connor Uselton at 72nd overall.
Would be shocked if he ever reached the bigs.
Redraft Pick: JJ Matijevic at 75th from the Astros
Big-time power. Reminds me of Kyle Schwarber a little bit, which means he almost has no other skill besides his power.
