10. Charlie Batch
The choice of journeyman Charlie Batch to begin the countdown may come as a surprise to some. However, in selecting the ten best Steeler quarterbacks of all-time, the choice gets slimmer and slimmer after analyzing the top five.
Batch came to Pittsburgh after a good career in Detroit where he was a starter. Unfortunately for the Pittsburgh native, he came to the Steelers with Ben Roethlisberger already solidly in place as the quarterback. Immediately, Batch became the clipboard holder waiting for a chance to play in the event of an injury.
As a starter in Detroit, Batch was playing for Lions teams plagued with a losing history since the 1950s. Over the course of four seasons in the Motor City, Batch won 19 of 46 games but threw for 9,016 yards in the process as the starter.
Obviously when becoming a Steeler, his playing time was greatly reduced. Still Batch did start in nine games in eight seasons and won six of those starts.
His 59.4 completion percentage in those games is respectable considering his work in spot duty. His touchdown to interception ratio was dead even at 12. He gained the confidence of the organization, and fans trusted Batch to not crash the Ferrari when playing in relief of Roethlisberger.
